Varanasi which is also known as Banaras, is one of the major religious hubs in India. It has played a major role in the development of Buddhism. Varanasi lies along National Highway and is in close proximity to Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport. The city's religious importance geew back in the 8 th centurywhen the Indian philosopher Adi Shankara developed the worship of Shiva as an official denomination of Varanasi. During the Muslim rule, the city still continued to be an important centre of Hindu pilgrimage, mysticism, devotion and poetry which further contributed to its reputation for religious excellence. The Ram CharitManas by Tulsidas was also written in Varanasi. Several other major religious writers were born in Varanasi, including Kabir and Ravidas. Shri Guru Nanak also visited Varanasi for Maha-Shivaratri in 1507. This trip is known to have played a large role in the founding of Sikhism.
